The simple answer is NO.
All our products are made out Industrial Hemp Seed and is tested to prove that it does not contain THC. The WA rating on hemp plants which grow this seed is less than 0.35%. However, this testing is on flower and leaf and by the time the plant has developed and produced seed - most of the flower/leaves have fallen away. After harvest, the seed is then cleaned and dried and any THC residual on the outside of the seed is minimal. There is no THC in the seed.
Interesting fact: THC is produced by the cannabis plant as a defence mechanism to ward of unwanted predators - insects, birds etc. Once the seed has been produced the plants THC content drops dramatically as it is of no use anymore to the plant. It has done its job.
Hemp can be fed out in oil or powdered extract form, which is a more economical option for horses. Always consider the source and quality of the hemp as rancidity can be a problem, as with any seeds due to the oils.
As little as 50g a day (roughly 1 cup) can help to maintain condition, increase fibre levels and provide a cool energy.
For a horses in heavy work or needing additional energy supply (such as for weight gain or pregnant or lactating mares) up to 1kg of hemp seed meal can be added to their feed per day.
GeoHempStock hemp is grown, pressed and supplied from the south west of WA.
Hemp seeds can be a source of good-quality protein for horses, with an amino acid profile comparable to soybeans, considering it contains all of the essential amino acids. Hemp seeds also contain both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids with a 1:3 ratio, which is more favorable than the ratio found in soybeans. Compared to flaxseed as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, hemp seeds provide a lower relative amount of omega-3 but do contain gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is a somewhat unique omega-6 fatty acid that supports anti-inflammatory processes. GLA is not found in flaxseed or other oils commonly fed to horses.
Further, hemp seeds for horses are reported to be palatable, highly digestible, and a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E.
BENEFITS OF HEMP SEEDS:
Excellent digestible fibre (around 27% fibre) which is comparable to copra meal.
Horses find it highly palatable and it is highly digestible in the hind-gut.
A good source of cool energy with 2.5 times more utilisable energy than protein or carbohydrates.
Does not need to be heated treated to be edible (unlike soy).
Free of phytoestrogens (unlike soy based feeds).
Is considered a super food that can ease joint pain and inflammation.
The oils and protein contribute to improving skin and coat health and hoof condition.
Unlike soy, nuts and other legumes, hemp does not contain trypsin (enzyme) inhibitors and oligosaccharides, which can cause stomach and gastric upsets.
